WELBECK SCORES FOR UNITED

Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck was on the score sheet for Manchester United in their match against Bolton. It helped Manchester United closed the gap to Manchester City to just the goal difference, although Manchester City have the opportunity to once again re-establish their three-point advantage when they take on Wigan athletic on Monday night.

However, closing down the gap was the best Manchester United could do on the evening and it was started off by Paul Scholes, who recently returned from retirement on the request from Sir Alex Ferguson. Manchester United has been suffering a number of injury problems of late, which has meant that youngsters like Danny Welbeck have been getting a number of opportunities.

The England striker did not disappoint in the match against Bolton as well. He was on the score sheet, as his second goal gave Manchester United in the comfortable lead they were demanding. Paul Scholes scored in the injury time of the first half to the Manchester United the lead. Danny Welbeck then doubled Manchester United’s advantage in the second half, although all was not rosy for Manchester United, as Wayne Rooney missed a penalty. Michael Carrick then continued his goal scoring form in recent weeks to put the game beyond any doubt in the 83rd minute.

“With everything he has got going for him, he could be capable of being in the team every week. You have got a kid busting a gut and desperate to impress everyone — the supporters, management and staff and, in this present day and age, that is worth its weight in gold. He has got what a lot of young players have not got in this day and age — he is focused, enthusiastic and wants to do it,” Former United star Lou Macari said in praise of Danny Welbeck.

Welbeck Wants to Sign

Danny Welbeck has handed Man United a massive boost as he signalled his intention to stay at Man Utd, and sign a new five year contract. It is thought that next month the 20 year old England striker will sit down with club officials and discuss a £45,000-a-week deal for five years.

It is thought that United are giving Welbeck the deal to show their gratitude for the incredible form he has been in since he returned to United from a spell away on loan at Sunderland. Welbeck who enjoyed a good last season with Sunderland has 18 months currently left on his contract that currently grabs him £15,000 a week without bonuses. It was revealed in the summer how initial talks were held and they were thought to be trebling his wages whilst extending the young Englishman’s deal for a further five years.

United have been busy trying to tie down their exciting new youngsters with better deals. New deals are thought to be being offered to the likes of Smalling, Cleverley and Hernandez, as well as Welbeck. But finally United aim to lure the striker into a new deal with a final wage of £65,000 should he ultimately trigger appearance and goal targets.

Welbeck is expected to sit out Tuesday’s home Champions League match with Benfica because Alex Ferguson hunts for the win required to top the group and dodge the big name teams in the knockout stages.

Sir Alex Ferguson said: “That is probably the bonus out of it — you hope you do finish top. First of all there are certain teams there and that is one issue but the most important one is that second game is at Old Trafford and that is always an advantage.”
