Danny Welbeck

Daniel Nii Tackie Mensah Welbeck, or Danny Welbeck as he is popularly called, is a striker who plays for Premier League side Manchester United. Danny Welbeck can also play as a winger on either sides and is known to exploit space by using this speed and skill. Danny Welbeck has so far represented the likes of Manchester United, Preston North end, and Sunderland. Amongst these, Welbeck regards the Sunderland loan spell as the major influencing part of his career.

He first joined Manchester United as a youth player at the start of the 2005 season, while it did not take long for him to make his first team debut. Ironically, it was against Sunderland in 2006 that he first made his debut for the under 18’s side. He first signed in 2007 a trainee contract only, but his rapid progress enabled him to get a full-time contract shortly afterwards. Only three years after he signed for Manchester United, Sir Alex Ferguson spoke about him in great length and how he regards Welbeck to be the future of Manchester United.

He also hinted at many first team opportunities for the England under 18 star. The first team debut for Danny Welbeck came in the League Cup match against Middlesbrough at Old Trafford. He made its debut for Manchester United in September 2008. He went on to make many League Cup appearances that season, while also scoring three goals in the process. He also made three appearances in the Premier League and scored his first goal against Stoke City.

Danny Welbeck soon made his Champions League debut as well, which he made against Besiktas in November 2009. The incredible progress that Danny Welbeck made within the last two seasons made United offer him a new contract that will keep him at the club until 2013.

Despite making many appearances, Sir Alex Ferguson soon decided that a loan move for the be the best possible opportunity for Danny Welbeck to get more experience of the game quickly. This led to his first loan spell at Preston North end in the January transfer window of 2010. In the remaining six months of the season, Danny Welbeck made eight appearances for Preston North end and scored two goals in the process. He returned to Manchester United at the end of the season, but was soon loaned out to Sunderland the following season.

The Sunderland loan move, however, brought a significant change to his career. Even though Sunderland manager Steve Bruce did not play him as a striker, Danny Welbeck made incredible progress playing in the wings. He impressed so much during his spell at Sunderland that Steve Bruce conceded that they will be looking at opportunities to sign the England international. However, Manchester United denied any intention of doing so and recalled him at the end of the 2011 season. Danny Welbeck made his international debut for England, despite being eligible for Ghana, in the 1-1 draw against Ghana. He replaced Ashley Young in the second half of the match to play against the side that had courted him.
